Last night the same cat was waiting for me.
Same place, same time. Even though we’ve only met once before I thought he would be there. He clearly isn’t a stray or anything, he wears a collar with a little ID barrel, and he hasn’t adopted me, he just wants to say hello.
But how does he know the time, after meeting me in the lane just once? How does he recognize me? By footstep or the sound of my walking stick? By how I breathe (I have a cold just now)? Cats know people’s voices but I hadn’t spoken yet.
How quick animals are to learn! And how they use that learning is very interesting. Cats are very smart, although they don’t do obedience. Here’s a quote from someone who obviously knows his cats.
Never try to outstubborn a cat.
Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love
I wonder if cats recognize other cat’s faces, or people’s faces? I’ve always assumed they do, but that’s partly because I can recognize cat’s faces. I haven’t any proof they can recognize mine.
